Who We Are
Founded in 2012 by John Ssemanda, Breaking Barriers, Connecting Cultures was born from a lived understanding of the challenges and opportunities that arise from cross-cultural journeys. For over a decade, we have served as a vital bridge for immigrants, diaspora communities, and international professionals navigating the complexities of cultural identity, educational access, and career advancement.
Our work has spanned the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Uganda, where we have cultivated deep relationships with educators, business leaders, and government stakeholders to dismantle barriers and build sustainable pathways to success. We function as a trusted liaison between individuals, diaspora networks, institutions, and government-aligned programs across the U.S. and Uganda.
We operate at the intersection of community and government, aligning our work with international development, education, and cultural exchange objectives supported by the U.S. Department of State and the Government of Uganda.

John Ssemanda is a visionary leader with a deep-seated passion for empowering communities and fostering global connections. As a Risk and Controls Manager and a values-driven leader, John has built a distinguished career spanning finance, technology, and consulting, with roles at top-tier firms such as Deloitte, EY, and Kaiser Permanente.
His professional journey has provided him with a unique perspective on the systems and structures that can both create and remove barriers to success. From establishing IT audit practices and ensuring SOX compliance in biotech, to leading financial statement auditing and compliance assessments, John combines technical expertise with a profound sense of social responsibility.
John's commitment to service extends beyond his corporate work. As the founder of Breaking Barriers, Connecting Cultures, he has dedicated himself to creating a platform that provides the same kind of mentorship and access to opportunity that has been instrumental in his own life.
